Over de auteur

Paul De Ridder (° Ukkel, 1948) promoveerde anno 1977 aan de Gentse Rijksuniversiteit tot Doctor in de Middeleeuwse Geschiedenis. Zijn proefschrift was gewijd aan Jan I (1267-1294) en Jan II (1294-1312), hertogen van Brabant. Tussen 1979-1988 inventariseerde Dr. De Ridder het omvangrijke archief van de Brusselse kapittelkerk van Sint-Michiel en Sint-Goedele. (1047-1797) Bovendien verrichtte hij fundamenteel onderzoek naar het taalgebruik te Brussel vóór 1794.

Omwille van zijn jarenlange inzet voor het Brusselse cultuurhistorische patrimonium werd Paul De Ridder in 1997 onderscheiden met de “ANV-Visser-Neerlandiaprijs voor Persoonlijke Verdiensten.” Deze prijs, ingesteld door de Joodse en vrijzinnige Nederlander Herman Lodewijk Visser (+ 1943), beloont personen die zich belangeloos voor de gemeenschap hebben ingezet.How did Brussels grow from a small settlement in the marshy valley of the River Zenne to become the capital city of the Netherlands, of the state of Belgium and of Europe ?
