Bureaucratics Revisited
Jan Banning
Bureaucratics Revisited is a fully revised, expanded edition of the acclaimed book Bureaucratics, first published in 2008. To create the seminal body of work contained in that book, Dutch photographic artist Jan Banning undertook an unprecedented global journey through the offices of those who wield state power. Over the course of five years and across eight countries, Banning trained his lens on the largely unnoticed human face of bureaucracy. The environmental portraits are defined by their square format, frontal perspective, and deadpan clarity. Each is taken from the eye level of the citizen entering the office. The result is a subtle dialogue between the roles of the office as a formal, performative representation of government authority, and as the civil servant’s private (work) space. At once an anthropological study and a work of visual poetry, Bureaucratics offers an ironic yet humane exploration of the administrative machineries that govern our societies while remaining largely invisible—and the individuals who sustain these. This new edition expands upon the original publication with previously unpublished photographs from the initial series, rare images from the early proto-series The Office (Mozambique), and selected works from later series that continue Bureaucratics’ distinctive visual language. The new edition spans twelve countries in total. In the new text, Banning reflects on the origins of this exceptional project and its trajectory over the past two decades.Since first being exhibited, Bureaucratics has travelled extensively, appearing in 45 museums, galleries, and other venues across eighteen countries on five continents. The work has been acquired by renowned museums, institutional and private collections, published in approximately twenty countries, and discussed in several academic studies.Bureaucratics stands as a landmark of conceptual documentary photography—a meticulous and humane portrayal of the universal apparatus of government, and the individuals who bring this quietly to life.
