Regional care provision is seen as a promising solution to growing scarcity and shortage of health workers. The shift towards ‘regionalization’ is intended to keep care affordable and accessible, especially in rural areas where the number of care services is declining. The growing belief in the potential of regions and regional collaboration highlights the need to examine how regions are conceptualized and practiced in health care, both theoretically and empirically. Using ethnographic research, Nienke van Pijkeren studies regional initiatives in depth. She analyses, for example, a triage system in nursing home care and shadows regional care teams in their daily work. The thesis advances a relational approach to caring regions, which provides insight into how (care) practices are linked to social-cultural and material constructions of regions - as both disadvantaged places and places of creativity. Caring regions require ongoing work and replacements, which affects care relations and challenges notions of time, distance and proximity. The work of caregivers is essential in these processes. This thesis advocates for greater visibility and structural support for their efforts in both policy and practices. As such it contributes to scholarly and policy debates about regionalization.
