Niet alleen eigenden sommigen zich een onevenredig groot deel van die ruimten toe maar ze vervuilen deze met zo'n enorme snelheid dat de wereld onleefbaar wordt.In de artikelen wordt het concept 'ontwikkeling' geconfronteerd met landschappen: de rurale en urbane samenlevingen maar ook de 'wildernis'. De complexe relatie die de mens onderhoudt met die verschillende omgevingen staat centraal. Die plaatsen zijn minder gemakkelijk in een mal te passen dan sommige politici en actoren uit de ontwikkelingsindustrie ons doen geloven. Niets mag als vanzelfsprekend worden aangenomen: ontwikkelingsstrategieën moeten rekening houden met (koloniale) geschiedenis, globalisering, glocalisering, processen van hybridisering, architectuur, religieuze achtergronden en claims op toegang tot de beschikbare ruimten en hulpbronnen op onze aarde. Het boek besteedt aandacht aan de Europacentrische uitgangspunten die ten grondslag liggen aan de 'ontwikkelingsindustrie' en de belangrijke rol van antropologen om andere percepties op te nemen in die uitgangspunten.
