In zijn bundel essays Ver van huis (uitgave De Bezige Bij, 2003) schrijft Cyrille Offermans over zijn vriend, de schilder: 'Boerderijen, torens, kastelen, kerken: ze moesten ooit bakens zijn geweest in hun omgeving, richtpunt voor reizigers, knooppunt van wegen.'Offermans vraagt zich dan af of Gerritz terugverlangt naar het houvast van vroeger? Dat is het in geen geval. 'Wat hem in die gebouwen zo aantrok was de keerzijde van de protserige opdringerigheid die hem in deze tijd zo tegenstond: hun rustige, voorname anonimiteit, hun strakke onopgesmukte vormen zo vanzelfsprekend als de loop van een rivier of de glooiing in een roodbruine Toscaanse akker.'Behalve in het land van Maas en Waal vindt Harrie Gerritz zijn inspiratie ook elders, met name in landen als Tunesië en Malta waar hij regelmatig verbleef. Zijn sculpturen in hout en brons laten dat zien; enkele ervan lijken herinneringen te zijn aan bouwwerken in deze landen.---In his bundle of essays Ver von huis (published by De Bezige Bij, 2003), Cyrille Offermans writes about his friend, the painter: 'Farms, towers, castles, churches: they must once have been beacons in their environment, point of reference for travellers, junction of roads.'Offermans wonders if Gerritz did long for a grip of the past. He didn't: 'What attracted him to those buildings was the flip side of the gaudy obtrusiveness that so opposed to him today: their quiet, distinguished anonymity, their austere, unadorned forms as natural as the course of a river or the stope in a reddish-brown Tuscan field.'In addition to the Land of Maas and Waal Harrie Gerritz also finds his inspiration elsewhere, especially in countries such as Tunisia and Malta, where he regularly stayed. His sculptures in wood and bronze show this; some of them seem to be reminders of construction in these countries.
