Hugo de Groot in Leiden/Grotius in Leiden

Deze rondwandeling voert langs de plaatsen van de Leidse studietijd van Hugo de Groot (1583-1645). De Groot begon in 1594 als elfjarige jongen aan zijn studie aan de universiteit van Leiden en verliet de universiteit in 1598. Later werd hij als politicus en geleerde een van de bekendste Nederlanders uit de Gouden Eeuw. Heden ten dage wordt hij beschouwd als een grondlegger van het huidige systeem van internationaal recht, en om die reden zelfs als een van de belangrijkste intellectuelen uit de Europese geschiedenis.
Deze sfeervolle wandeling voert langs de locaties waar hij woonde en studeerde, en geeft en passant een beeld van de stad, van personen met wie hij te maken had, en van het functioneren van de Leidse universiteit. Die universiteit (opgericht in 1575) had zich als centrum van vernieuwend wetenschappelijk onderzoek toen reeds een internationale reputatie verworven.

This walking tour follows the locations of Hugo Grotius' (1583-1645) undergraduate years in Leiden. Grotius matriculated at Leiden in 1594 when he was 11 years of age, and left the university in 1598. Later, as a politician and as a scholar, he became one most well-known Dutchmen from the Golden Age. Nowadays he is regarded as one of the principal founders of the current system of international law, and for that reason as one of the foremost intellectuals from European history.
This scenic tour shows the places where he lived and studied, and gives an impression of the town, of some of the people around him and the workings of Leiden university at that time. Leiden university was established in 1575 and had by then already gained an international reputation as a centre of innovative science and scholarship.

Jan Waszink is lecturer and researcher in the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden University. His research concerns the political and historical works of Hugo Grotius, Justus Lipsius and others, and more in general the links between literature, historiography and political thought as a source of innovation in the early-modern period.
