In die zin creëert hij een geactualiseerde, postmoderne versie van het 17e eeuwse vanitasmotief. Dat getuigt van enig lef. De vergankelijkheid van schoonheid en rijkdom, de vluchtigheid van de menselijke verlangens en driften is een thema dat zowat haaks staat op wat de meeste media ons vandaag voorschotelen. Moons gebruikt de hedendaagse media om hen op een elegante manier te ondermijnen. In die zin koppelt hij esthetiek aan subversiviteit. Zoals de surrealisten al wisten: schoonheid kan scherp zijn.

Spank Moons draws connections between current fetish notions, as digital information and mobile communication, and age-old themes, as eros and thanatos. This way, he creates a contemporary, postmodern version of the 17th-century vanitas motif. This accounts for a certain amount of courage. The ephemeral aspect of beauty and wealth, the fleetingness of human desires and lusts, is a theme at odd with the message of the majority of contemporary media. Moons exploits these media to undermine them elegantly. As such, he links aesthetics to subversiveness.
