Fons Stoffels successfully applied to an striking advertisement in the Dutchsports newspaper of those days 'Sport en Sportwereld.' The advertisementinvited amateur players to play soccer in the USA for a long period of time.Fons was included in the selection for the Dallas Tornado, a team started byLamar Hunt, millionaire and well-known sports entrepreneur in the USA.Lamar appointed Bob Kap, a soccer coach of Yugoslavian origin, to select a group of young lads in England, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. The objective was to prep this team from August 1967 up to April 1968 for the American competition which would start in the latter month. Bob Kap and Lamar came up with the idea that it would be best to create an excellent performing team by going on an international tour with these guys. Moreover, this would create goodwill for American soccer. The idea resulted in a unique World Tour, unprecedented by any other sports team, not then and not ever after. The journey took the team through four continents and nineteen countries, and a total of forty-five matched were played. During a players reunion in Dallas in May 2014 it was decided to write a book to recount this unique World Tour. Fons was given the honor to describe this very special sports history. It became an intriguing story about the birth of an American soccer club, but it also provides an international portrayal of the sixties.
