The intersection of the Great Resignation and WEF’s ‘Top 10 job skills of tomorrow’ gives the right-brain its moment in the limelight. According to last year’s World Economic Forum report 50% of all employees will require re-skilling by 2025, citing, “Critical thinking and problem-solving top the list of skills employers believe will grow in prominence in the next five years.” Marijn van der Poll, Eindhoven-based author and internationally renowned designer adds analytical thinking to the mix in his book Right-brainer: Survival Handbook of Office Epiphanies. At the same time as the WEF list came out in late 2020, Texas A&M University's Anthony Klotz coined ‘the Great Resignation’, which stemmed from growing quit rates and burnout in the US. Now it is a global phenomenon, as people rethink their work-life balance in the second year of the pandemic. Van der Poll’s response is to self-assess/develop one’s agility in the workplace through ideas. When pitched against left-brain academic rigor, the right-brain has traditionally been seen as emotional, focused on aesthetics and is largely misunderstood. Van der Poll presents the right hemisphere’s divergent nature as an attribute to help a thinker park the search for quick answers. Left brain logic and reason have the habit (and associated training) of forcing to seek a single solution. If you let it, he argues, your right brain can push this desire forward breaking the impasse of many complex problems by means of an intermediate thinking step, an idea. “Your left brain has received a solid 20 plus years of training, your right brain, 0. Your left brain has clever tools such as math, language, and science. Faced with everyday, open-ended, slightly more complex questions, and we wind up staring at a canvas or clutching small pieces of sticky yellow paper. For all of the business processes that deal with complex problems, we have overlooked the foundational element of it all, ‘the idea’.”Marijn van der PollThe premise of van der Poll’s Right-brainer is that if you want to be competitive in the workplace, it will happen when you use your complete brain in the pursuit of ideas. Ideas are the north star of this non-fiction debut. In it he describes not only what ideas are, but how they can be hypothesised, explored and then tested. And so, out of the early 2020s Great Resignation march workers who have decided they will do more than just survive in their concrete jungles. Those who emerge want to thrive in life. Marijn van der Poll says if you learn how to mine your brain for ideas, just like him, you too can make a livelihood from your very own, original, ideas for the rest of your career.
