Mobility is everywhere. Throughout the years, the movement of people (mobility) and goods (logistics) has evolved to be an essential part of the economy. The need for mobility increases steadily as the world's population grows and consumers become more and more demanding. However, all this comes at a certain cost. Transportation also brings along side effects, which often have a negative impact on society or the environment like (local) air pollution, climate change, noise nuisance, accidents, congestion, etc.Mobility and logistics can also be organised in a more sustainable way. In order to do so, it should look at the societal impact of new concepts compared to older ones.In this handbook, the authors present the basic concepts on sustainable mobility and logistics, along with recent advances in research and methodologies. After a brief first introduction, basic concepts of Sustainable Mobility with a focus on passenger transport are covered in part two. The third part describes the basic concepts of Sustainable Logistics. In the fourth part several methodologies used in the field of sustainable mobility and logistics are explained, like impact assessments, socio-economic evaluation tools, GIS based models and traffic simulation models.The book is edited by Cathy Macharis and Joeri Van Mierlo. They are Professors at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. They are leading the research group MOBI (Mobility, Logistics and Automotive Technology) which is an interdisciplinary group (50 members) focusing on sustainable logistics, electric and hybrid vehicles and travel behaviour. The chapters in the book are written by them and the other researchers from MOBI.Cathy Macharis is also visiting professor at the University of Gothenborg. She has been involved in several regional, national and European research projects dealing with topics such as the location of intermodal terminals, assessment of policy measures in the field of logistics and sustainable mobility, electric and hybrid vehicles, etc. She is the chairwoman of Brussels Mobility Commission and of the Nectar cluster on logistics.Joeri Van Mierlo is expert in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles (power converters, energy storage, energy management) as well as to the environmental comparison of vehicles with different drive trains and fuels (LCA). He is Vice-President of AVERE, the European Electric Vehicle Association and chairs the EPE chapter "Hybrid and electric vehicles".
