Het boek bevat de inaugurele rede van prof. dr. Ferry de Jong, die in verkorte vorm werd uitgesproken op 14 januari 2016 ter gelegenheid van de officiële aanvaarding van het ambt van hoogleraar in het strafrecht en strafprocesrecht aan de Universiteit Utrecht. De rede handelt over de aard en de rol van angst in onze laat-moderne samenleving. Die angst en de daaruit voortvloeiende obsessie met veiligheid worden betrokken op de afkalving van gemeenschap stichtende (symbolische) structuren in de samenleving en de potentieel verscheurende (diabolische) krachten van criminaliteit. Eén en ander mondt uit in de vraag: welke uitdagingen leveren deze krachten op voor de ontwikkeling van een nieuwe kritische grondslagentheorie van het strafrecht?

This book contains the inaugural lecture of Prof. Ferry de Jong that was delivered in abridged form on January 14, 2016, on the occasion of the public acceptance of the position of Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Utrecht University. The lecture is devoted to the nature and role of anxiety in our late-modern society. This anxiety and the appertaining obsession with security are discussed in conjunction with the shrivelling status of (symbolic) structures that uphold communal bonds within society and the potentially schismatic (diabolic) forces of criminality. The discussion leads to the question: what challenges are presented by these forces for the development of a novel critical groundwork theory of criminal law?
