›The Adventures of Phoebe Zeit-Geist‹ is an iconic American erotic graphic novel from the 1960s, penned by Michael O’Donoghue and illustrated by Frank Springer. A product of its time, it is capturing the subversive spirit of the era. Today, rare antiquarian editions are often fetching prices in the three-digit dollar range. | The story follows Phoebe Zeit-Geist, an aristocratic girl of Serbian descent who was raised in northern Tibet. After being kidnapped at a garden party, she endures a series of sadistic ordeals, including sodomy. The comic’s narrative traverses both space and time, allowing its creators to tackle pressing issues of the period, such as the Vietnam War, racial discrimination and sexual liberation. Phoebe’s adventures are a mix of genre parodies, intense eroticism, and exaggerated violence. | Considered a cult classic, ›The Adventures of Phoebe Zeit-Geist‹ is recognized as a pioneering work in the ›Underground Comix movement‹. Bold, irreverent, and unapologetically politically incorrect, it was banned in several countries for its explicit content – and remains a must-read for any comic enthusiast.
