Somewhere far back in time, this began because humans preferred to stay in the same area rather than move with the temperature and climate zones. And in the beginning, it was still only clothing they ‘carried’, so people were still mobile, as hunter-gatherers, just like all other species, except they were ‘well dressed’.But then: can you name a single other species that grows its own food? All other species remained hunter-gatherers, except Homo sapiens. And with agriculture came the moment when people also began to build their own shelters, different from nests made of twigs or dug-out burrows. It was no longer just about food; people wanted 'castles'... And thus began the great transportation of raw materials. Today, humans move more earth and rock than the Earth itself does through volcanism, tectonics, and erosion.Someone has to be the first, you might think. And that's true; after all, we are only 10,000 years into that process—a mere speck in the grand scheme of Earth's history. But that doesn't mean it has to end there...To explore this, our story begins with the first housing of Homo sapiens and how that can spiral out of control, where humans ultimately turn out to be just a minor cog in the larger machine. At least, that's the argument made at the end.
