Tyne cot cemetery & memorial
Paul Cornelissen
Tyne cot cemetery & memorial The Tyne Cot Cemetery is the most visited war site of the Great War. Tyne Cot is located in the former battlefield of the bloody ‘Battle of Passendale’. With almost 12,000 graves it is the largest cemetery of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the Western Front. The impressive Tyne Cot Memorial commemorates a further 34,957 names of missing soldiers who were killed after 15 August 1917. This photo book is dedicated to the ‘Tyne Cot Cemetery’ and the ‘Memorial to the Missing’. It is a photographic record of the cemetery, the memorial wall with the names, and the long rows of tombstones. Tyne Cot is an important international symbol for commemorating the Great War, the Ypres Salient and the Western Front. Every year more than 300,000 interested parties find their way to this significant place. Without exception, visitors are struck by the silence, the atmosphere and the austere character of the soldiers’ cemetery. And Tyne Cot offers fantastic views across the former battlefields.
