In this book, three famous, late nineteenth-century artists take centre stage: Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) and Henri Le Fauconnier (1881-1945). They played a crucial role in the genesis of the Bergen School. The works of these great masters are juxtaposed with the oeuvres of the very first Bergen School artists: Leo Gestel, Gerrit Willem van Blaaderen, Else Berg, Mommie Schwarz, Dirk Filarski, Arnout Colnot and the Wiegman brothers. This book paints a new and more nuanced picture of the rise of Expressionism in the Netherlands.
