An Introduction to Writing in an Academic Context
This book is designed to introduce the basic principles and conventions of writing in an academic context. “An academic context” here refers to college or university—an environment dedicated to higher learning. This environment has specific expectations and conventions for writing; this book aims to help its users meet them.
All Write is intended as both a course and a reference book; it may be worked through systematically, chapter by chapter, or it may be used to look up information on a specific topic or question. To this end, it includes an appendix summarizing important theory, tables outlining key points, and an index. All Write covers the following topics:
1. Writing for an Audience
2. Writing a Summary
3. Constructing an Argument
4. Structuring an Argument
5. Supporting an Argument
6. Writing an Essay
Each chapter begins with a list of objectives complemented with a writing checklist. Following the objectives, each chapter presents and explains a topic or skill central to writing in an academic context, providing both theoretical background information and concrete examples. Finally, each chapter contains a practical application of the skill discussed. This section shows how to apply what has been learned to academic situations.
This book shows its users how to manage the information they encounter in their studies, and how to coherently present this information and their own opinions about it to their professors and fellow students.
