De vraag werd aan mij gesteld door de rector van mijn oude middelbare school, Wil Lippits, die zelf scheikundige van opleiding was. Hoewel ik op dat moment op het punt stond om aan mijn vierde en laatste jaar van de European Law School te beginnen kon ik haar niet van repliek dienen. 'Hoe bedoel je?', was mijn niet al te sterke tegenvraag. 'Nou, scheikundigen meten en onderzoeken dingen in een laboratorium, en daar publiceren we dan over, maar wat doen juristen dan?'Ik moest haar het antwoord schuldig blijven, en het is een vraag die me eigenlijk nog steeds bezighoudt.Nu - bijna 30 jaar later - zal ik pogen een antwoord te geven op deze vraag, en dan in het bijzonder toegespitst op de vraag hoe juristen opgeleid zouden moeten worden. --------- 'What is it exactly that jurists do?' It must have been the summer of 1997 on an archaeological dig in front of the historical walls of the city of Ypres.1 The question was asked by the rector of my former high-school, Wil Lippits, who taught chemistry and was a chemical engineer by education, and even though I was about to start my fourth and final year of the European Law School, I was not able to answer her question. 'What do you mean?', was my not all too strong comeback. 'Well, in chemistry we experiment and measure things, about which we publish, but what is it that jurists do?' I had to forego the answer, and the question has been bugging me to a certain extent ever since. Now - almost 30 years down the road, I will attempt to answer that question, specifically considering the question how jurists should be educated.
