The Badger on Trial is a humorous yet sharply satirical story about the peasant David Štrbac, who brings a badger before the imperial court, accusing it of having “devoured his entire cornfield.” In the scene where “David takes the badger out of the sack” and tries to tie it to the table, the tragicomic dimension of peasant life unfolds—marked by poverty, fear of authority, and blind faith in the law.The text masterfully portrays the clash between the simple peasant and the rigid bureaucratic apparatus, full of comic misunderstandings, exaggerated praises of the Empire, and David’s persistent appeals to “order and law.” It is a lively, linguistically rich narrative that reveals the social conditions, mentality, and humor of rural Bosnia.
