Bjørn Aris book ''The Cutting Edge'' is totally different from any other management book I've ever read. And I am quite hooked on management books after 20 years working in non profit (which really benefits from management techniques (mission, vison, strategy & my addition: tactics) and tools: as a former charity marketeer fundraiser I cherish ISO procedures and the Outlook planning tools. In management books one of my favorites is the Top 100 aller tijden, of all times in Dutch sorry guys, which summarizes the 100 most important management books (by Aernoud Witteveen, Kees Visser). These days I'm in to impact investing trying to achieve charities goals on a worldwide scale. So when your class mate from high school first becomes an investment banker and consequently a management guru and writes about it, that is an irresistible read. As said it is quite unusual: it comes not from academic life or professional consulting, it is a personal journey building on things he has done and combining them into something completely new. He explains Japanese management strategies built on their cultural history of the Samoerai and iaido, Japanese swordfighting technique, and uses that to equip professionals mostly mentally. Briefly: To develop and keep a clear view, focus on goals which are as much the process as the aims. The part on the 4 basic rules is a clear example of what Bjørn calls 'cherry picking' by presenting briefly how to feel good and function well; be effective. I am not into swordfighting and know little about Zen(Bhuddism), but I do appreciate a well written book opening windows to further exploring Bjørn's ideas. Were I in the Netherlands I'd try to join one of his trainingsessions and envie the people that get offered the opportunity through their work. I strongly encourage charity leaders to take note of Bjørns views to increase the impact of their efforts.
